BLACKSBURG, Va. - Two Virginia Tech football players each were ordered to perform 100 hours of community service for their roles in a September incident involving police.
Split end Josh Morgan and defensive end Chris Ellis admitted there was enough evidence to convict them of misdemeanor charges of obstructing justice and disorderly conduct, but did not enter formal guilty pleas.
In addition to the community service, Montgomery County General District Court Judge Gino Williams said both men will be on probation for one year and must take an anger management class.
Early Sept. 24, police received a report of a possible fight as dozens of patrons left bars at closing hour.
Officer Gary Thomas said Morgan punched the driver's side window of a truck that almost hit him. When Thomas confronted Morgan and told him he was under arrest, Morgan tried to back into the crowd, the officer said.
The officer then sprayed Morgan with pepper spray as Ellis attempted to rally the crowd to Morgan's defense. He was then arrested as well.
Both were suspended from the team for one game for their actions.
Morgan finished the regular season as the team's second-leading receiver while Ellis finished with 35 tackles, ranking 11th on the team. Both are juniors.
