GAINESVILLE - Gainesville was recently recognized by a state group for its environmental monitoring program.

The city received the Public Education "Program of the Year Award" from the Georgia Association of Water Professionals.

The program was responsible for 294 presentations in which thousands were educated on environmental awareness, environmental monitoring, water conservation and ways they can
become involved in their environment, according to city officials.

The group taught two entire grade levels at Gainesville Middle School. The group also teaches city staff on the importance of proper disposal and good housekeeping and conducts environmental inspections of various streams, stream walks and the inspection of bodies of water to determine pollution sources.
