Gilmer County manhunt grows

ELLIJAY - U-S Marshals are joining the search in Gilmer County for a convicted felon with a mean streak and an A-K-47.

Gilmer Sheriff's Captain R-T Henry says James Sluder reportedly threatened his wife and child on Monday, then left with a gun and hundreds of rounds of ammo. Complicating the search further: Sluder told people he knows that if the law catches up with him, he won't go easily.

Residents in the area have been asked to stay inside.

Police in Ellijay are taking special precautions regarding schools with the manhunt going on. Chief Larry Callahan says schools will be open but police will be there.

"We will will have officers patroling around the school grounds," he said. "And also on foot as well."

Ellijay has all but one of the schools in the county within city limits of Ellijay. Callahan said the county will up security at Oakland Elementary.

Meanwhile, three people have been arrested for trying to help Sluder elude arrest.

Anyone with information on Sluder's whereabouts is being asked to call the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office at 706-635-4617.
