Atlanta awarded stop on AVP Tour

<p>Atlanta has been selected to host an AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event this summer, the AVP and the Atlanta Sports Council announced Thursday.</p><p>The AVP Atlanta Open is scheduled for July 6-9 at Atlanta's new Atlantic Station.</p><p>"This is a big win for Atlanta," said Atlanta Sports Council president Gary Stokan. "The AVP Tour will give our city an annual marquee lifestyle sports event that will really stand out as something special in an already impressive annual sports lineup."</p><p>Stokan noted beach volleyball will be returning to Atlanta 10 years after it made its debut as an Olympic sport in the 1996 Atlanta Games.</p><p>The AVP Tour has such top players as 2004 Olympic gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor and such professional stars as Holly McPeak and Karch Kiraly, who won the sport's first Olympic gold medal in Atlanta.</p><p>The Atlanta Open will be televised by Fox Sports Net.</p><p>___</p><p>On the Net:</p><p>HASH(0x1cd9d6c)</p>
