GAINESVILLE - A spokesman for Wachovia Bank says the letters we first reported on Thursday morning, originally believed to be a scam, are legitimate after all.

Wachovia spokesman David Oliver has confirmed that although the letters look suspicious at first glance, they are not a scam.

Gainesville resident Tom Lee says he received one of the letters about a month ago. The letter says recipients must provide their Social Security Number to the bank or face a $50 fine by the IRS.

"I thought it was a little odd at the time, so I saved the letter," Lee says. "Then I see the letter on television and it really worried me."

Lee says then he called the credit bureaus to put a fraud alert out on his Social Security Number.

"Then I get ahold of [Wachovia's fraud hotline] and find out that it's a legitimate letter," Lee says.
