TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) A blend of newcomers and veterans will return kickoffs for Florida State on Monday night against Miami.
Senior tailback Leon Washington will team with true freshman tailback Antone Smith on the first kickoff return. Senior receiver Willie Reid and redshirt freshman receiver Kenny O'Neal will comprise the second unit.
``I'd like to go on offense fresh, but for the team I'll go out there and do it,'' Washington said. ``We need a veteran guy back there to look after these young guys. If they kick it to me, I'm going to try and take it to the house.''
Washington has returned 25 kickoffs for 574 in his career including a 96-yard touchdown as a freshman.
Reid has returned just eight kickoffs in his career but owns the school-record for punt return yardage in a season. Reid's 522 punt return yards last season eclipsed Deion Sanders' old record of 507 yards. He will be the first-team punt returner again this season.
Coach Bobby Bowden on Monday ended the competition for the field goal kicking job. Sophomore Gary Cismesia, who started three games in 2004, will get the nod in the opener.
