ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the unemployment rate
in the metro Gainesville area declined to 4.3 percent in August, down one-half percent from 4.8 percent in July. The rate was 4.1 percent a year ago.

Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate declined to 5.2 percent, down four-tenths percent from 5.6 percent in July. The comparable national rate for August was 4.9 percent. Georgia's jobless rate also stood at 4.9 percent in August of 2004.

For the Georgia Mountains region, which incudes Gainesville, the rate declined to 4.1 percent in August, down six-tenths percent from 4.7 percent in July. The area's jobless rate was 4.0 percent a year ago. Every county in the region recorded a dip in the jobless rate.

Georgia added 41,500 jobs in August, according to state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, many of those among seasonal workers at the local public schools and in other service-related industries. During the same period last year, Georgia added 34,600 jobs, with many of those in the local public schools.
