TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Florida State may be forced to turn to a third-string safety Saturday against Syracuse, since injuries are slowing the Seminoles' top two players at the position.

Starter Pat Watkins missed some of Thursday's workout; he hurt his left shoulder Wednesday by colliding awkwardly with a teammate during a scrimmage. Watkins, the secondary's only returning starter from last year, is third on the team with 17 tackles and has one interception.

``He was limited out there,'' defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said.

Backup Roger Williams has also been slowed since the preseason by a nagging muscle pull in his left leg. Williams has six tackles in three games.

That could mean more action for freshman third-teamer Kenny Ingram, who has played in all three games, but has only four tackles.

(Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press.
