LULA - Lula Elementary School has been notified that it will receive a 2005 We the People "Freedom" Bookshelf for its school library from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The project is part of the Endowment's "We the People" initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture. This donation includes 15 classic works of literature in English as four Spanish-language editions. Each book reflects the theme of "Freedom" and has been chosen to engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers, according to principal Terry Dover.

Cheryl Williams, media specialist at the school, said she was "thrilled" to learn Lula had been selected to receive the set of books. Williams says she didn't think Lula would be chosen one of the recipients because "there would be so many libraries applying." She says the collection will augment materials already being used by the school and is expected to arrive next month.

In addition to the books, the school will receive posters, bookmarks, and other materials that will help publicize the books. Lula was one of only 1,000 schools and community libraries nationwide selected to receive the books.
