BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) LSU running back Alley Broussard, who injured his knee at practice Saturday, will have surgery in the next few days, team orthopedic surgeon Brent Bankston said.

``We want him to return as close as he can to full motion without pain before the reconstructive surgery,'' Bankston said. ``That helps with recovery. We do that with ACL injuries.''

Bankston, who was scheduled to see Broussard Wednesday, will do the surgery.

``I could see doing the surgery either late this week or early next week,'' he said. ``We're trying to get that swelling down now.''

Bankston did the same type of surgery for LSU quarterbacks Rohan Davey and Marcus Randall and tailbacks LaBrandon Toefield and Joseph Addai in recent years.

Davey and Randall each returned in just four months.

``Quarterbacks can come back quicker from this because we can protect them,'' Bankston said. ``You can't do that with backs. Alley should be back in six to nine months. He'll be running in three months, cutting by six. Then it's a question of doing that at a high level.''

Toefield, now in the NFL, had the surgery twice.

``Alley was devastated at first,'' Bankston said. ``But he now knows how common it is to return from this injury.''

Information from: The Daily World, http://www.dailyworld.com

(Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press.
