Carpenter picks up 18th win of season

PITTSBURGH (AP) Chris Carpenter picked up his 18th victory and Albert Pujols (POO'-hohlz) belted his 34th homer in the St. Louis Cardinals' 8-to-3 win at Pittsburgh.<br>

Carpenter is the majors' first 18-game winner, improving to 18-and-4 by allowing three runs and four hits in eight innings. He's 10-and-0 on the road this season, and 10-and-0 in his last 13 starts overall.<br>

John Rodriguez homered and had three R-B-I's as the Cardinals beat the Pirates for the 16th time in their last 19 meetings. David Eckstein added three hits and two R-B-I's to the win.<br>
<br>
Pirates starter Kip Wells was chased in the first inning, charged with five runs and six hits. He's 7-and-13.<br>
<br>
The outcome allowed Tony La Russa to tie Sparky Anderson for third place on the all-time managerial list with two-thousand-194 victories.<br>
