CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina reserve quarterback Roger Heinz was expected Wednesday to miss the season after undergoing surgery to repair two herniated discs in his back, the school announced.
Heinz began having back pain this summer, according to a statement from North Carolina. His surgery was scheduled for Wednesday.
``We had hoped this could wait until the end of the season, but he is in too much pain to continue so we want to go ahead and get it done,'' coach John Bunting said. ``I'm disappointed for Roger and our team.''
Heinz, a sophomore from Tallahassee, Fla., entered the season as the backup to Matt Baker.
Heinz redshirted in 2003 and played in just one game at quarterback last year.
Joey Bozich, a redshirt freshman from Hinsdale, Ill., will compete against Ben Johnson, Jay Spence and Bobby Rome for the backup job.
