GAINESVILLE - With this week's NEXTEL Cup race coming up Saturday at Bristol , Tennessee, Lanier National Speedway had a Thursday night special edition race featuring the Southern Thunder Late Model Dirt Series. This series has started running at various asphalt tracks to compliment its dirt schedule.

The night began with a 15-lap exhibition race with a champion of the Iceman series, Phil Peppers, taking on late models driven by Chris Dilbeck and John Wes Townley. Dilbeck and Townley have been Lanier Speedway regulars in the Legends series for the past few years and had their debut appearances with the Late Models Thursday night. Dilbeck led the trio to the green flag and never let up as he led the field all the way to the checkered flag.

The Southern Thunder Tour Dirt Late Models made their debut appearance with a 40 lap event. Bo Shirley led the field to green and brought Mike Head along with him as they jumped out to a quick lead in the first few laps. The caution came out at lap 24 for fluid on the track. The restart came with Shirley again jumping out front and stretching out the lead while the biggest battle was for 3rd with Chris Noah holding off the charging Keith Edge. The top five finishers were Shirley, Head, Noah, Edge, and Dennis Hale.

The Commerce Dodge Legends were the only weekly series regulars who raced Thursday night. Kyle Fowler took the checkered flag in the Semi Pro Legends. In the Master/Pro Division Brian Weimer was the winner.
