BRASELTON - Hall County officials broke ground Thursday on Fire Station #14 near the Reunion subdivision on Spout Springs Road.

The $1.2 million station is funded by SPLOST V according to Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

"This will be our fifth station that we've built in SPLOST V. We've built our training center already and we have two more after this one. Hogan Construction has the contract to construct all three of these," he said.

County Commissioner Deborah Lynn said that the new station almost didn't happen after being tabled last year.

"This project is one that almost slipped through the cracks," she said, "It was revived and brought back and the contractors were gracious enough to honor the bid they had been awarded in November of last year, and south Hall's insurance premiums are going to go down."

Architect Doug Straughan, Vice President of Hussey, Gay, Bell and DeYoung said that the station would be the same as other prototype fire stations, but that the look will be different.

"John Wieland Homes approached David Kimbrell when they learned that the station was going to be going out here. The design of the previous prototype fire stations didn't really fit in with the aesthetics of the community here," said Straughan, "Representatives from John Wieland Homes asked if they could chip in money to help redesign the facade of the fire station so that it would fit in with the neighborhood."

John Wieland Homes designed the Reunion neighborhood.

The station should take about six months to complete. After the station is complete, work will begin on the new station #5. Kimbrell said that #5 will be the south battalion headquarters.
