2005 N.E. Ga. Sports Hall of Fame inductees announced

GAINESVILLE - Thirty-six local athletes and three teams will be inducted into the Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame this year. Eight other individuals will be recognized for bringing Olympic Sprint Canoe/Kayak and Rowing to Lake Lanier in 1996.

This will be the second class of inductees.

The hall of fame is a part of the Northeast Georgia History Center at Brenau University.

The inductions will take place Aug. 27 following a luncheon at Riverside Military Academy. The first ceremony was held last August and a plaque honoring each athlete is featured at the history center. The initial class of inductees totaled 68.

Those selected for induction this year are:

Kingsley Barrett-golf, Judy Bishop-rowing, Errol Bisso-wrestling, Shelly Garner Buffington-football, O'Neal Cave*-basketball, Charles Cooper*-basketball, Jerry Davis-basketball, Bill Fields*-rowing, Mike Forster-rowing, Cy Grant*-football, Marnie Jastad-rowing, Ann Jones-equestrian, Anthony King-football, Phil Niekro-baseball, Lanier Phillips-football, Brad Roper-football, Nan Sisk-basketball, Colby Tilley-basketball, and Seth Vining-basketball.

Also, "Red" Barron*-football, Steve Bussoletti-football, Gloria Colter-equestrian, Robert Cornett, Jr.-baseball, Brian Farrer-golf, Annette Forster-rowing, Trent Fricks-basketball, Jay Gaspar-rowing, Bobby Gruhn*-football and golf, Patrick Johnson-football, Henry Kannapell-rowing, Doug Lipscomb-basketball, Don Parks-basketball, Christina Richards-rowing, Danny Rylee-equestrian, Gober Sosebee*-auto racing, and Joe Hicks Tipton*-baseball, the 1930 Braselton High School basketball team, the 1979 Gainesville Post 7 American Legion baseball team and the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club. The history center will also recognize and award tokens of appreciation to Billy Payne, A.D. Frazier, Dick Yarbrough and Charlie Battle of Atlanta, and, Jim Mathis, Steve Gilliam, Mary Hart Wilheit, and Jack Pyburn of Gainesville, for their efforts in bringing the 1996 Olympic Sprint Canoe/Kayak and Rowing events to Lake Lanier.
