GAINESVILLE - Beginning this fall, three federal campgrounds in northeast Georgia will be converted for day use only.

According to the state Department of Economic Development, they are the Lake Chatuge Recreation Area Campground in Towns County, the Waters Creek Campground in Lumpkin County, and the one at the Lake Blue Ridge Recreation Area in Fannin County. All are in the Chattahoochee National Forest.

The conversions will begin for Lake Chatuge and Waters Creek this September. The work at Lake Blue Ridge will occur by next September, according to the report.

The conversion - by the U.S. Forest Service - will involve the removal of camping pads, lantern posts, grills and tables from the campground portion of the recreation area, while
allowing the continued day-use activities such as picnicking, hiking,
biking and fishing. Boat ramps, along with general access, will remain
open to the public.
