NEW YORK (AP) The Atlanta Braves purchased the contract of veteran right-hander Jay Powell from Double-A Mississippi on Friday and optioned right-handed pitcher Adam Bernero to Triple-A Richmond.

To make room for Powell on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher John Thomson was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The 33-year-old Powell was 2-0 with an 0.64 ERA with Mississippi. He signed a minor league contract with Atlanta in January after undergoing ligament transplant surgery last year.

Over parts of 10 major league seasons, Powell was 36-23 with a 4.19 ERA. He made 23 appearances for the Texas Rangers last season.

Bernero was 4-3 with a 6.51 ERA in 36 games with the Braves.

Thomson has been on the DL since May 17 with a strained flexor tendon on his right middle finger.
