NEW YORK (AP) Boston Red Sox pitcher David Wells has been suspended six games by Major League Baseball for making contact with umpires Chris Guccione and Angel Hernandez during a game against Toronto earlier this month.

Wells was ejected in the seventh inning by Guccione in a win at Fenway Park July second. The left-hander turned his back to home plate and waved his glove in apparent disgust after allowing a single to Shea Hillenbrand.

After being thrown out, Wells walked toward Guccione and the pair screamed at each other before they were separated. Wells said after the game that he uttered a profanity about home-plate umpire Larry Poncino, who had his own back turned walking back to the plate.

(Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press.
