PARIS (AP) The French Open will continue without the top two women's seeds. Top seed Lindsay Davenport and number-two Maria Sharapova combined to win just eleven games in their quarterfinal matches yesterday.
Mary Pierce bounced Davenport from the tournament, rolling to a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Davenport had been the last American still alive at Roland Garros. The French Open remains the only grand slam event to elude Davenport.
Sharapova also lost in straight sets, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to tenth seed Justine Henin-Hardenne (EH'-nehn ahr-DEHN'). Henin-Hardenne has won her last 22 matches, all on clay.
Number-seven Nadia Petrova is the highest women's seed to reach the semifinals. Petrova cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ana Ivanovic (ee-vah-NOH'-vihch).
