GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Grand Jury is expressing concern about the amount of drugs coming into the community from south of the border - especially as it relates to illegal immigration.

In its presentments, the May term of the grand jury expressed concern about the, quote, influx of illegal immigration in our community, and the attendant increase in drugs and other crimes that comes from the additional population.

The jurors urged employers to follow federal guidelines in insuring that their employees are legally able to work in the U.S. and not "turn a blind eye" to any obvious fraud concerning the identity and legal status of the person hired.

"We are particularly concerned with the amount of drugs in our community and the extent of illegal drugs flowing into our community from Mexico and other Central American countries," jurors said.

"While drugs themselves are a problem, they are the root of other crimes. No one in our community is immune to the influence of drugs which cause a deterioration of our moral and social values. We urge the community to cooperate with law enforcement in keeping them aware of illegal acts. We are concerned about the influx of illegal immigration in our community, and the attendant increase in drugs and other crimes that comes from the additional population. We urge employers to follow federal guidelines in insuring that their hirees are legally able to work in the United States and not turned a blind eye to any obvious fraud concerning the identity and legal status of the person hired."

The grand jury observed that successful enforcement of the law is "made more difficult when crimes are committed within the illegal immigrant population because of the reluctance of the illegal immigrant community to cooperate with law enforcement due to the illegal status of the community and because the offenders can easily change their identities and flee the country after the commission of crime."
