OXFORD, Miss. (AP) Aaron Rawl threw a three-hitter and South Carolina kept Mississippi in third place in the SEC West, defeating the Rebels 2-0 on Friday night.
Rawl struck out six and walked none in the complete-game shutout for the Gamecocks (34-17, 13-12 Southeastern Conference), who entered the weekend 3.5 games behind East Division leader Tennessee.
Ole Miss (35-16, 13-12) started the day one game behind West co-leaders Alabama and LSU, but couldn't keep pace despite losing pitcher Mark Holliman's 13 strikeouts.
The Gamecocks did all their damage in the second inning. Chris Brown's RBI double off Holliman scored Brendan Winn, and Niel Giesler followed that with a run-scoring single which scored Brown.
From there, it was all Rawl. The senior right-hander allowed just two Ole Miss baserunners to reach second in improving to 8-5.
Holliman allowed five hits but fell to 5-3. Justin Henry had two of the Rebels' hits.
