Buford's Johnson races to 134th top qualifying spot

HEBRON, OHIO - Buford's Warren Johnson turned in a track-record time in Pro Stock qualifying Saturday and claimed the top spot for the 134th time in his career at the Pontiac Performance NHRA Nationals at National Trail Raceway.

Johnson, who earned his first No. 1 starting spot at National Trail Raceway in 1978, had a track record 6.723 seconds at 205.10 mph in a Pontiac to lead the 16-car field. It is Johnson's fourth top qualifying effort of the season and his ninth at the quarter-mile drag strip located just east of Columbus.

Larry Dixon, Whit Bazemore and G.T. Tonglet also led their respective divisions in qualifying.

Dixon earned his 24th career No. 1 spot and first at National Trail Raceway by powering his Top Fuel dragster to a time of 4.510 at a track-record speed of 331.94.

Whit Bazemore claimed the top qualifying spot for the 29th time in his career, with a track-record 4.762 seconds at 322.34 mph in a Dodge Stratus.

Tonglet took his first top qualifying position of the season and second of his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 7.090 at 187.03 on a Harley-Davidson.
