"In the middle of 2006, the numbers in 706 are going to run out," says PSC Spokesman Bill Edge. "So, we'll have to begin assigning any new telephone service to the new area code."
Edge says that means everyone who now lives in the 706 area code will have to begin dialing 10 digits sometime next year. The new area code will not be assigned to a geographical area, but will be much like the 678 area code in metro Atlanta. Only new telephone numbers will be assigned the new area code. The three digits for the new area code are still unknown.
The public meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. June 16th at the PSC office located at 224 Washington Street in Atlanta.
