JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) Kris Harvey doubled home two runs in a four-run first inning and Clemson held off a ninth-inning rally to beat North Carolina State 5-4 Friday, knocking the Wolfpack out of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
Clemson (39-20) moves on to Saturday's semifinals against Virginia, which along with Georgia Tech is still unbeaten in the tournament. The Tigers, having lost once, will need to beat the Cavaliers twice to earn a berth in Sunday's championship game.
N.C. State (40-17) lost consecutive games for just the second time this year, but the Wolfpack are likely to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Clemson starter Robert Rohrbaugh (7-2) had a two-hitter entering the ninth, but after getting the first two outs, Rohrbaugh gave up a single and an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-3.
Jeff Hahn came on in relief, but he surrendered a single before letting a run score on a wild pitch. Hahn then struck out Jonathan Dix with the tying run on second to preserve the win and earn his third save.
Clemson jumped on Matt Payne (2-1), making his first collegiate start, for six hits and four runs in the first. The Tigers batted around with Travis Storrer and Stan Widman adding RBI singles to go with Harvey's double.
Payne was lifted after the first, but Wolfpack reliever Phil Davidson held the Tigers to just three hits and one run over the next 6 1-3 innings. Taylor Harbins' tenth homer gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead in the seventh, but that run would be the difference.
