Two University of Georgia football players could be suspended after the pair were arrested during a downtown Athens bar fight in which police used pepper spray to control the crowd.

Kedric Golston, 22, a starting defensive tackle, was charged with simple battery of a police officer, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct. Derrick White, 21, a senior linebacker still vying for a starting spot, was charged with disorderly conduct.

All the charges are misdemeanors.

Reserve defensive tackle Marquis Elmore was listed on an incident report. Police said more charges could be pending.

Coach Mark Richt is still investigating the incident, said associate athletic director Claude Felton.

"He's trying to talk to everybody involved and find out all the details so he'll have an understanding of exactly what transpired," Felton said.

The fight erupted at The Classic City Saloon about 2 a.m. Sunday. The police report states, "There were so many trying to get at each other it was hard to tell who was fighting whom."

White was described in the report as "very irate." An officer tried to control him, but he kept pulling away. After other officers helped subdue White and placed him in the police car, Golston approached the officers and insisted that they "let his friend go," the report states.

An officer told Golston to step back and when he refused, the officer arrested Golston, the report states, adding that the crowd became so surly that police used pepper spray to disperse it. Officers also drew their batons, but didn't hit anyone, police said.

Two hours after their arrests, Golston was released on a $9,000 bond and White was released on a $500 bond.

The Bulldogs' reserve offensive linemen Zeb McKinzey and Michael Turner already have been suspended for this year's season opener against Boise State University after the two were arrested during the offseason.

Richt has shown little tolerance for fighting in the past, suspending Marcus Howard from playing in the Capitol One Bowl for a fight in 2003 and suspending tight end Randy McMichael in 2001 after a fight at The Classic City Saloon.

___

HASH(0x2866944)
