A day after a 14-year-old was killed by gunmen firing into a crowd outside a birthday party in nearby Conley, another teenager was killed in what police say was a similar but unrelated incident at a party in Jonesboro.

Several fights broke out at the Jonesboro home Saturday night and partygoers ran outside where two armed men _ one wearing fatigues and carrying an assault rifle _ began firing into the crowd, said Clayton County police Capt. Jeff Turner.

Larry Bishop Jr., 18, of Jonesboro, was shot several times and died the next day at an Atlanta hospital, Turner said. Two 16-year-olds and a 20-year-old man were also wounded.

Police believe the shooting may have been payback for a fight between gang members at Mundy Mill High School on Friday, Turner said. One of the students was cut on the mouth and needed stitches.

The shooting doesn't seem related to an incident about 26 hours earlier in which 14-year-old Krystal Williams was fatally shot in the back of the head, Turner said.

The Friday shooting took place at a Sha-La Harden's 16th birthday party. About 200 people were in attendance, and Harden's mother asked people to leave after a fight broke out inside the home. A police officer responding to a noise complaint also asked everyone to leave.

A car drove up shortly afterward and one or more of the occupants began firing into the crowd, Turner said.

Recent violence at Clayton County schools has prompted Superintendent Barbara Pulliam to propose using metal detectors, and the Rev. W. Rod Johnson, a county school board member, said Sunday he is organizing a task force to look into the gang problem at the schools.

"The incidents are very isolated now, but we want to minimize it before we start seeing an increase in numbers," Johnson said.
