GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Chad Jackson is having no problems handing the transition phase of Florida football.
``He's our play-maker,'' said new Florida coach Urban Meyer. ``When we say who made the play, it's Chad Jackson. He's been consistent all spring.''
Jackson, a junior who averaged a team-best 22.3 yards on 26 receptions as an outside receiver last season, has been moved to an inside spot in Meyer's spread-option attack. The adjustment to the new offense hasn't been smooth, but Jackson is making it look simple.
``It's a lot different playing inside,'' Jackson said after catching four passes for 67 yards in Florida's scrimmage Saturday. ``You're running in there with the linebackers and bigger guys and you just have to fight them off. I've still got a lot more work to do.''
Quarterback Chris Leak completed 5 of 7 passes for 80 yards, yet was sacked on three straight plays against the first-team defense. The offensive line struggled all day, yielding six sacks.
Meyer has questioned Florida's toughness all spring, and chided the Gators for a poor practice on Friday. But he praised the way the Gators rebounded Saturday.
``They weren't out on a Friday night in Gainesville,'' Meyer said. ``We are putting them through some tests, and they passed the first one. It was an important scrimmage. We got a lot done.''
