CLARKESVILLE - Officials at the Habersham County Jail say the facility is overcrowded. Administrator Brian Ausburn says one factor leading to the overcrowding is drug arrests since late last fall.

Currently there are 132 beds in the jail and 142 inmates. When there are too many inmates, mattresses are handed out and inmates sleep on the floor, according to Ausburn.

Sheriff Deray Fincher is looking at a number of proposals regarding expanding the jail. A plan could be in the works by the end of the month.
