Wauka Mountain teacher mourned

CLERMONT - A memorial service is planned Wednesday for a longtime teacher at Wauka Mountain Elementary School who died Sunday following an extended illness.<br> <br> Sheryl Askew, 57, taught school for 20 years - 14 of them at Wauka Mountain where she was teacher of the year in 1996 and again 1997.<br> <br> Askew annually organized and presented a Christmas program to the businesses and organizations that supported Wauka Mountain Elementary School. <br> <br> Askew had worked with ther school&#39;s annual Chicken Pie Supper since 1965. The event began in 1925 and the purpose has remained the same: bake chicken pie to raise money for the school.<br> <br> &#34;It was a way back then to raise money and with so many chickens in this area that was the direction to go in,&#34; Askew said at the 2002 supper.<br> <br> The memorial service will be at 4:00 Wednesday at Concord Baptist Church<br> <br> (A full obituary is elsewhere on this site.)<br> <br> <br> <br> <I> Accessnorthga.com&#39;s Jerry Gunn contributed to this story. </I><br> <br>
