Martin Luther King's widow is helping to spearhead a new effort aimed at pulling young people into civil service, and especially, the voting booth.

Coretta Scott King was giving the keynote speech Wednesday night in Washington for the national launch of Generation Engage. According to the group, the grassroots movement is a product of the November elections in which only 42 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds showed up to vote, far less than the national average.

"This forgotten half of our generation _ the young people who have already entered the labor force _ has been marginalized for too long," said Adrian Talbott, executive director of Generation Engage.

Pilot projects will begin this summer in North Carolina and Virginia, and the ultimate objective is to build a national network to serve as a sounding board for young voters.
