To make room for Smith on the roster, the team placed guard Kenny Anderson on the injured list with a strained left hamstring.
Smith, who next week will participate in the Rookie Challenge and NBA Slam-Dunk contest as part of the NBA All-Star weekend in Denver, has missed the last five games with a sprained right ankle.
Smith will be the Hawks' first representative in the All-Star events since Shareef Abdur-Rahim in 2002.
Smith is averaging 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 40 games, including 25 as a starter.
