TOPEKA, KANSAS - A Baptist church in Kansas with a national reputation of anti-homosexual activities is jumping into the controversy brewing in White County.
Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, which has a history of demonstrating at such high-profile events as the Democratic National Convention (and mincing no words in doing so), plans to picket White County High School March 7.
A group of students has indicated it would like to form a Gay-Straight Alliance, but no official application has been made. The school meets next Thursday but is not expected to address the issue, unless it receives a formal application.
The 50-year-old church is described on its Web site as "Old School (or, Primitive) Baptist Church."
"In short, we adhere to the teachings of the Bible, preach against all form of sin (e.g., fornication, adultery, sodomy), and insist that the doctrines of grace be taught publicly to all men," according to the site.
It claims to have conducted over 22,000 demonstrations, worldwide, since June 1991.
