An anarchist who fatally shot himself when authorities closed in to arrest him on a bank robbery charge may have set a fire that destroyed two condo buildings in a multimillion-dollar mixed-use development called Atlantic Station, the FBI said Tuesday.

Gregory Steven Clark had been investigated since becoming a suspect in the violent holdup of a Wachovia Bank in September.

The FBI learned that Clark was interested in robbing banks to fund the activities of the Neo Millennium Liberation Army, whose stated goal was to "free the oppressed minority population of Atlanta."

Authorities said more than $5 million in damage was caused by the four-alarm predawn fire July 24 at Atlantic Station, built on the site of the former Atlantic Steel site within site of Georgia Tech University and the downtown Atlanta skyline. In one building, 322 condos under construction were destroyed. A few hours later, a second blaze on the roof of the nearby Art Foundry damaged about 80 units.

There were no injuries, but the heat melted the paint on 20 parked cars.

FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said the investigation into the fire continues because others may also be involved.

___

HASH(0x1cdb28c)
