Coach Tommy Bowden had said Whitehurst would be the starter as long as he wasn't feeling a lot of pain.

Whitehurst has started 38 of the last 39 games for the Tigers and is the school's all-time leader with 9,019 yards passing.

Whitehurst's hurt his shoulder in Clemson's overtime loss to Boston College on Sept. 24.
