Grangers hold off Elephants

GAINESVILLE - The LaGrange football team showed why it is the two-time defending Class AAA champion Friday night.

The Grangers took advantage of five Gainesville turnovers, turning them into 14 points en route to a 28-20 win in the quarterfinals at Bobby Gruhn Field.

The final two came in the final two minutes to snuff out Gainesville drives deep in LaGrange territory as the Red Elephants tried to mount a rally.

LaGrange (10-3) will move to play the Peach County-Stephens County winner in the Georgia Dome next week.

The Red Elephants (11-2) were looking for their second trip to the Dome in the last four years.

The game started ominously for the Elephants, who fumbled the opening kickoff, which led to 22-yard touchdown by the Grangers' Bernard Heard on the third play of the game.

Gainesville tied the game late in the first quarter taking advantage of a LaGrange turnover when Tyson Randolph capped a short 17-yard drive with a 5-yard scoring run.

LaGrange retook the lead on an 11-yard touchdown run by Marshall Sheppard that capped an 86-yard drive

But three plays later Gainesville answered right back on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Jeffrey Greene to Kendrick Lewis and then took its first lead on 42-yard field goal by

But the Grangers got a 15-yard TD pass to from Travis Tucker to Sheppard to end the half with a 21-17.

The second half was dominated by the defenses with Gainesville's only score coming on a 33-yard field goal by Henderson to cut the lead to 21-20.

But again laGrange answered right back with a 65-yard drive capped by a 1-yard scoring run from with just under nine minutes left in the game.

Twice Gainesville got inside the LaGrange 30 but both drives were snuffed out by interceptions, that final one coming with 26 seconds left in the game.

Lewis finish with 149 yards and one touchdown on five catches for Gainesville.

LaGrange outgained Gainesville 280 to 170 for the game.
