CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) U-N-C Chapel Hill will place its athletes on probation if they are caught using anabolic steroids and could be banned from athletics.
The school also strengthened its overall substance abuse policy for student-athletes.
Both changes take effect Monday and follow a nine-month review of the policy, which was last revised in 1997.
Athletics director Dick Baddour says the school also bolstered its testing, education, counseling and disciplinary sanctions for the use of other banned substances.
As part of the changes, North Carolina will administer more tests on a random basis throughout the year than it has under the previous policy.
