COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina's Syvelle Newton, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, came out of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt with a left ankle injury.

Newton had just rushed for an 11-yard touchdown to put the Gamecocks ahead 28-14 with 11 minutes left when he remained on the ground amid cheers at Williams-Brice Stadium. He was quickly assisted off the field by team trainer Rod Walter, Newton's left leg not touching the ground.

Trainers worked on Newton briefly along the sidelines before he was carted off to the locker room, his left ankle in a supporting brace. The team announced that Newton would not return.

The Gamecocks used Newton at quarterback, wide receiver and running back against Vanderbilt.

(Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press.
