No. 1 Buford faces early elimination in AA tourney

COLUMBUS - In a shocking development Thursday, Class AA No. 1 Buford was beaten 4-2 by Rutland in the first round of the Class AA state softball tournament at the Columbus Softball Complex.

The Lady Wolves (28-9) now face an elimination game Friday at 9 a.m. against Berrien. Buford now will have to win three games to get into the championship round.

Fellow Region 8-AA team Greater Atlanta Christian, meanwhile, beat Berrien 1-0 and then beat Rutland 5-0 to move into Friday's semifinals. GAC will face Morgan County, which beat Southeast Bulloch 9-0 and then Metter 7-0, at 1 p.m. Friday.

In other action, another Region 8-AA team, Wesleyan, fell 2-0 to Metter in the first round and will play Southeast Bulloch at 9 a.m. in an elimination game.

The Buford-Berrien winner will face Metter at 1 p.m. Friday while the Wesleyan-SE Bulloch winner will play Rutland at 1 p.m.
