<p>Rodney David Monroe, police chief of Macon, Ga., will take the same job in Richmond, Va., city officials announced Monday.</p><p>Monroe, 47, was introduced at a news conference at police headquarters and will begin overseeing the department of 628 police officers in two to three weeks.</p><p>The capital city has been plagued by drug crime and has had nearly 100 murders a year recently. The latest "City Crime Rankings" placed Richmond ninth when compared with 354 other cities of more than 75,000 residents, according to the publisher, research firm Morgan Quitno of Lawrence, Kan.</p><p>Monroe has been chief in Macon for 3 1/2 years, overseeing a department of 400. He was on the police force in his native city of Washington, D.C., for 22 years and became an assistant chief.</p><p>He was one of three finalists among about 60 candidates for the Richmond job.</p>
