GAINESVILLE - Senior Jenni Weaver poured in 20 points to lead the Pickens County girls basketball team to a 61-46 win over Chestatee Tuesday night at the Chestatee gym.
The game was the Region 7-AAA North opener for both teams.
Chestatee (3-9, 0-1 in subregion) never led and the game was tied just once at 2-2 before the Dragonettes (8-6, 1-0) went on an 11-3 run to grab a lead they would never relinquish.
Pickens coach Donnie Byrom called it a gutsy effort by his squad, which had just eight players dressed.

"We have some injuries, some adcademic things, some kids sick and to come on the road in this region and get a win is huge," Byrom said. "The girls showed a lot of heart out there. I was very proud of them.

"We needed a good start to the subregion because I think it's going to be a close race and we need all the wins we can get."
Sophomore Meagan Stephens had 10 points and 8 assists for Pickens and Tifani Smith added 11 and Kala Turner 10 for the Lady Dragons.
Chestatee trailed just 25-21 at halftime but Pickens used an 11-4 run to take a 36-25 lead.
The Lady War Eagles cut the lead to 40-33 by the end of the third quarter but Pickens used an 8-1 run to open the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Erika Rylee led Chestatee with 14 points. Nicole Lackey had 9 and Tiffany Haynes 7 for the Lady War Eagles.
