GAINESVILLE - Dirtpiles instead of pileups and bulldozers instead of bulldogging fullbacks dotted Bobby Gruhn Field in Gainesville Monday morning as renovation of the home of the Gainesville High Red Elephants got underway.

City officials say the work is expected to be finished in June, in plenty of time for the start of this fall's football season August 19.

There had been talk of putting down artificial turf, but Gainesville Parks & Recreation Board Chairman Charles Musselwhite said a few weeks ago that idea had been shelved because it would be too expensive.

Musselwhite said Gainesville High fans can look forward to new red-and-white seats as part of the renovation on the home side of the field and the layout of the field itself will include a regulation soccer field. The work will also include soil erosion control and storm drainage.
