Tasha, Lady Dogs start slow, rout Ole Miss

ATHENS - Ole Miss held Georgia's leading scorer, Tasha Humphrey, to one point in the first half, and it did not matter.

The Lady Bulldogs led 42-24 at halftime, and then Humphrey scored 17 more in the second half to lead No. 17 Georgia to a 78-51 win Thursday.

``This was a team win,'' said Georgia (12-3 overall, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) coach Andy Landers. ``It was such a solid game by everyone. We played well without getting much from Tasha in the first half, and we dominated the boards.''

Georgia out-rebounded Mississippi (10-4, 0-1 SEC) 59-31, led by freshman Humphrey with 11 (her sixth double-double of the season). Rebecca Rowsey and Alexis Kendrick added nine rebounds apiece.

``Georgia took us to town on the boards,'' Mississippi coach Carol Ross said. ``Not being as aggressive as we should be shows up in two areas on the boards and on the free-throw line. We did not play as hard as we should have played.''

``I just started a little lackluster,'' said Humphrey of her first half. ``I was not as mentally prepared as I needed to be. At halftime, Coach told me to get focused.''

Georgia won its seventh straight, halting Mississippi's six-game winning streak in the process.

Amber Watts led Mississippi (10-4, 0-1 SEC) with 25 points. Armintie Price added 12 for the Lady Rebels.

Cori Chambers scored 11 of her 16 for Georgia in the first half when Humphrey was quiet. Guards Sherill Baker and Janese Hardrick scored 10 apiece.

Halfway through the first half, Georgia led 16-14, and Mississippi's Watts and Georgia's Rowsey had eight points apiece. The Lady Bulldogs' outside shooting - five 3-pointers in the last eight minutes of the half - sparked their offense. Chambers hit three treys in the first half.

Chambers was also assigned to Ole Miss' Price, who entered the game averaging a team-high 15.7 points a game. She did not hit her first field goal until the 3:24 mark of the first half.

``Chambers was outstanding defensively,'' said Landers.

``Price is a great offensive player,'' Chambers said. ``She gets a lot of her points off of rebounds. So I tried to box her out too.''
