John Thompson and Tyrone Nix, hired as co-defensive coordinators by the Ol' Ball Coach, had multiyear contracts ratified by the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees executive committee. Dave Wommack, who'll coach the secondary, also had a two-year deal approved.
Thompson, who resigned after two disastrous years as East Carolina's head coach, received a three-year contract worth $175,000 a year.
Nix, who worked with Thompson when both coached defense at Southern Miss, got a two-year deal worth $165,000 this next season with an increase to $170,000 the season after that.
Wommack, who was with Thompson and Nix at Southern Miss, has a two-year deal with a bump after the first season as well. Wommack gets $150,000 the first year with a raise to $156,000 after that.
The board of trustees must sign off on all athletic contracts where the total compensation is greater than $250,000.
The new contracts give South Carolina five assistants with multiyear contracts. Two Spurrier holdovers from the staff of recently retired Lou Holtz, defensive coach Ron Cooper and recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill, had deals for more than one season, Gamecock athletic spokesman Kerry Tharp said.
Holtz's last staff also had that many assistants with multiyear agreements: quarterbacks coach Skip Holtz, defensive coordinator Rick Minter, running backs coach Dave Roberts, Stockstill and Cooper, Tharp said.
Spurrier, who won six Southeastern Conference titles at Florida from 1990 to 2001, returned to college football in November, signing a seven-year contract with a base salary of $1.25 million. The deal could grow to more than $2 million if Spurrier reaches several incentives like winning an SEC or national championship.
Spurrier's staff duties will break down like this:
Spurrier will act as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach; David Reaves, part of Holtz's staff, will help with quarterbacks; John Hunt will coach the offensive line; former Arkansas star runner Madre Hill will coach running backs; Steve Spurrier Jr., Spurrier's son, will coach receivers; and Stockstill is expected to work with the tight ends.
On defense, Thompson will work with inside linebackers; Nix takes control of the defensive line; Wommack will coach the secondary; Cooper, last season's secondary coach, is expected to handle the outside linebackers.
Spurrier has yet to publicly designate anyone to head up South Carolina's special teams.
