WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Derrick Wimbush rushed for two touchdowns Saturday to lift Fort Valley State past Winston-Salem State 21-19.
Wimbush scored from 4 and 72 yards out in the second quarter for the Wildcats (2-0), who also got a 32-yard scoring pass from Willie Copeland to Adam Bailey. Wimbush rushed 12 times for 132 yards before he was ejected early in the third quarter for a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Josh McGee has two touchdown passes for the Rams (0-2), who tried to rally from 11 points down at halftime.
Wimbush's big run gave the Wildcats a 14-3 edge with 14:05 left in the first half, a lead that grew to 21-10 on his 4-yard score.
But Wimbush was ejected with 13:32 left in the third quarter, giving the Rams a chance to cut into the deficit. Winston-Salem State's Matt Hind kicked a 38-yard field goal, and eventually the Rams closed the gap to 21-19 on McGee's 17-yard touchdown pass to Stan Wright.
But the Rams came up short on the 2-point conversion. McGee's pass for Jared Brevard was broken up by Derrick Fitzgerald with 18 seconds left in the third quarter.
Brandon Hussey had 11 catches for 106 yards for Winston-Salem State.
