A Gwinnett County judge has barred Sen. Renee Unterman, 50, from her family's Loganville home and from having contact with her family, pending a hearing.
Unterman, a Republican, has served one term and is unopposed for re-election in November. Her district includes a small section of Hall County near the Gwinnett line.
Her estranged husband, Dr. Marc Unterman, filed a civil domestic violence petition in Gwinnett County Superior Court on Aug. 23. Marc Unterman is a Lawrenceville cardiologist.
Judge Mark A. Lewis immediately ordered the case file sealed, but he unsealed the documents Thursday at the request of attorneys representing The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Renee Unterman said in a written statement she is "being treated for depression that was partially brought on by my husband's requesting a divorce."
Unterman also chastised the Journal-Constitution for going to court to ask that sealed documents "in a divorce-related case" be made public.
Unterman, a former Loganville mayor and Gwinnett County commissioner, served two terms in the state House before winning the Senate seat.
