BRASELTON - Buford's Tim Weinhart pitched in for birdie out of a bunker on the 16th hole to take the lead for good Sunday, then held on to win the Georgia Open for the first time.

He beat Kris Blanks by one shot and avoided a playoff when Blanks' approach shot on the par-4 finishing hole stopped inches from the cup. Weinhart closed with a 2-under 70 for a 281 total. Blanks shot71-282.

Ned Michaels had the low round of the day with a 67 at The Legends course at Chateau Elan and tied two-time winner Dave Schreyer (69) and Todd Peterson (70) for third, three strokes behind Blanks.

"It's a big monkey off my back," Weinhart said. "I finally won a major. I've lost the Atlanta Open in a playoff, and I lost this one last year in a playoff."

Third-round leader Craig Stevens ballooned to an 80 Sunday and finished tied for eighth with Chan Reeves.
