Just as they did in winning last year's Class AAAAA title, Camden County played solid defense Saturday and waited for an opportunity to pounce on which they got on a bad snap to knock off No. 3 Parkview 12-10.

With 7:37 left, Parkview snapped high over punter Josh Veal's head, and instead of kicking it through the end zone for a safety, Veal tried to scramble for the ball with two Camden County defenders closing in. Camden County's William ``Boofy'' Johnson came up with it for a touchdown, a 12-10 lead and all the momentum.

``They say luck happens around speed,'' said Camden County coach Jeff Herron, who has won 16 games in a row. ``I don't know. That was a mistake and we made a great play.''

The Wildcats graduated seven starters off their record-setting defense that posted nine shutouts last year.

``We just have to hold up the tradition,'' said Johnson, who smiled when he explained Boofy was a family nickname. ``We don't get the respect in the south .125Georgia.375. Everyone thinks Parkview is the team. We've just got a point to prove game by game.''

A deflated Parkview managed only 5 yards on offense on its next two possessions and then watched the game end on an incomplete deep pass by Jeff Witt. Parkview coach Cecil Flowe would not comment after the game.

After Parkview's Jason Fisher broke a 20-yard run, Witt followed with a two-yard run in for a 10-6 lead in the third quarter.

NO. 2 VALDOSTA WINS FIRST GAME IN NEW $6.5 MILLION STADIUM: What better way to properly open a rebuilt Bazemore-Hyder Stadium than with a win. Valdosta took advantage of three Shiloh fumbles in the first half to put 21 points on the board by halftime and go on to a 28-7 victory in Friday night's season opener at its new-look stadium.

``It was a good result for our first game,'' Valdosta coach Rick Darlington said. ``We did some things well, and there were some things we need to improve. But overall, we're pleased to win this game.''

Jamal Scott ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, and freshman quarterback Michael Turner gained another 98 yards while leading the Wildcat offense to four touchdowns.

The key plays were a 15-yard pass from quarterback Bobby Cunningham to Carl Wynn, which had a roughing-the-passer penalty tacked on to the end of it, and Cunningham's 11-yard pass to Grant Myers on fourth-and-8 from the VHS 36.

NO. 5 LOWNDES DOMINATES TRI-CITIES: Lowndes hit Tri-Cities in the mouth, almost literally, early on and never relented en route to a 52-0 beating of the Bulldogs Friday at Martin Stadium.

The No. 5 Vikings came out on their first possession and drove 60 yards in 11 plays, capped by Marlon Jones' 5-yard touchdown run, to take an early 7-0 lead.

``It was just a good opening night,'' said Lowndes coach Randy McPherson, who called it the best season-opening victory of his career. ``We played hard and things just came together.''

It was 31-0 when Tri-Cities got its initial first down with just over two minutes to play in the first half. The Bulldogs totaled just 29 yards in 23 plays at halftime, thanks to 46 yards passing from Rutland.

Vikings senior fullback-linebacker Octavius Everett ended the game with 114 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries. Junior Lynn Williams had 65 yards and a score on eight carries and freshman Darriet Perry ran for 61 yards on four carries, including his first varsity touchdown, a 53-yard run that put Lowndes ahead 31-0 before halftime.

The Vikings rolled up 383 yards of rushing offense.

Tri-Cities (0-1, a new member of Region 2-AAAAA) had three fumbles in the first quarter.

NO. 9 COOK LOSSES TO LOWER CLASS CAIRO: Cook High came up short in a 24-7 loss to Region 1-AAA's Cairo Friday night at Cook Memorial Field.

Running back Danta Harrell accounted for Cairo's only offensive touchdown of the night on a 65-yard scamper with 9:39 to go in the first quarter, tying the game at 7-7.

Then trouble began to mount up for the Hornets. The first of two blocked punts of the night set the Syrupmaker offense up on the 17-yard-line.

Four plays later, Trey Johnson put Cairo up by three with a 26-field goal 55 seconds into the second period. The defenses won the battle for the remainder of the second quarter, with Cairo holding the 10-7.

Special team mishaps continued in the second half when the Cook High long-snapper sailed the ball over Rowe's head and into the endzone where the Syrupmakers jumped on the ball making it 17-7 with 8:51 to go in the third period.

Cairo blocked another punt in the fourth quarter and ran it in for a touchdown.
