After lengthy delays, construction of luggage-screening rooms underneath Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is to begin this week, bringing confusion and traffic tie-ups.

Starting at midnight Friday, roads in front of the North Terminal will be ripped up to begin building the rooms that will house the luggage-screening equipment. The same thing will start at the South Terminal in the middle of next week.

As a result, private vehicles not be able to drop off passengers by the curb. They will be diverted to a section of a parking garage where a "Kiss'n' Fly" area will be established.

The work is expected to continue for a year at the South Terminal, used mainly by Delta Air Lines, and for 15 months at the North Terminal.

"I think it will be very disruptive at first, especially for those who do not pick up or drop off passengers regularly," said Atlanta business travel consultant Chris McGinnis.

Officials had said construction on the $215 million project could start in November 2003, but the work was delayed by negotiations with the federal Transportation Security Administration over payment and design details.

___

On the Net:

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport: www.atlanta-airport.com

___

HASH(0x28664d0)
