CARSON, CALIFORNIA - Venus Williams needed two games to warm up, then overwhelmed 19-year-old Ashley Harkleroad of Rossville, Georgia 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the J.P. Morgan Chase Open.

The second-seeded Williams hit powerful groundstrokes throughout the 50-minute match that sent Harkleroad scrambling behind the baseline.

Harkleroad won the first two games before Williams took the next seven while losing only six points in the final five games.

Harkleroad - who lost to Williams earlier in the year in the Australian Open - is trying to recapture her form after a four-month layoff caused by a torn ligament in her right elbow.
