GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City Council has given its approval to two thorny issues which had dogged city officials for several weeks.

The council has okayed a $2-a-month increase in the residential garbage fee and the rezoning for a lawyer's office on Forrest Avenue just off Green Street.

In recent weeks, the council had debated how much - if at all - to raise garbage fees. Most of the discussion centered on either $2 or $3 a month.

LAW OFFICE

Members of the Bradford Corners Homeowners Association and others had fought plans by Van Stephens to construct an office for his law practice on Forrest Avenue, citing increasing non-residential encroachment in the area.

But, Stephens has defended his proposal by saying the area is already in transition from residential to office/commercial.
